Mark Zuckerberg requires little introduction. The Harvard dropout is the co-founder of Facebook and currently operates as its chairman and CEO. With an estimated net worth of $75.6 billion, he is not only the fifth richest person in the world, but he was the youngest person to ever become a billionaire.
Zuckerberg took Facebook public in May 2012, and he still owns around 17% of the company which is currently valued at $544 billion. As of last year, Facebook had over 2 billion monthly users - about 26% of the entire world’s population or about 53% of people who have internet access.
Philanthropically, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged to give away 99% of their Facebook stake over their lifetimes. They run the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative which was set up to “advance human potential and promote equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research, and energy.”
How Mark Zuckerberg maximizes his productivity
Zuck is well known for his quirky clothing choices - or rather lack of them - as he chooses to wear the same outfit each day as part of a wider practice that he uses to enhance his productivity. He claims that by reducing the number of unnecessary distractions in the morning, he enhances his productivity throughout the day.
“I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community,” said the CEO of Facebook.
Unsurprisingly, Zuckerberg’s time is incredibly precious. For that reason, he prefers to allocate as much of it as possible to important matters that require his focus and determination.
“I spend most of my time thinking about how to connect the world and serve our community better, but a lot of that time isn't in our office or meeting with people or doing what you'd call real work.”
Having some free time in the morning where he can actively think about ideas and business matters can make a world of difference in preparation for the day ahead.
How to reduce morning distractions and enhance your productivity like Mark Zuckerberg
1. Eat the same breakfast each day
This is actually inspired by Tim Ferriss’ advice from the slow carb diet, but it’s principles apply to Zuckerberg’s as well. By eating the same thing each morning, it means you don’t have to think about what to make - better yet, make it the night before (e.g. overnight oats or a fruit bowl).
Prep your breakfast at XX:00 every evening
Not only does this help get you into a habit of having healthy nutrition, you can take it a step further and get into a routine of doing one weekly breakfast prep session on a Sunday evening for extra time-saving.
2. Decide what you’re going to wear the night before
Similar to the breakfast example, preparing what you’re going to wear can be a big help in removing unneeded distractions in the morning. Removing this task from your daily routine helps to reduce your suffering of decision-making fatigue.

Wear the same outfit every day
Zuckerberg isn’t the only successful individual who has opted for the similar outfit each day option. Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, and Albert Einstein are all examples of people who have decided to cut the choices from their wardrobe.
If wearing the same thing is a bit much for you to start with you can always wear the same outfit each day of the week. For example, have a ‘Monday outfit’. As an additional benefit, this will also reduce your decision making requirements when shopping for new clothes.
3. Spend some (limited) time getting brought up to speed with the world
Setting aside a few minutes to catch up with messages or emails and maybe some breaking news is a great way to catch up on the world after a full night’s sleep.
“The first thing I do is look at my phone. I look at Facebook to see what’s going on in the world. I check my messages; I look at Messenger and WhatsApp,” according to Zuckerberg in reference to his morning catch-up routine.
Spend 10 minutes each morning reviewing messages, reading emails and skimming news headlines
This helps you declutter some of the “stuff” that your inbox has accumulated overnight, and will also help you prioritize some tasks before you even set foot in the office. Be careful though, it’s just as important to limit the amount of time you spend doing this in the morning as it can quickly become a time suck.
